The Red Hat Platform Tools Engineering team is seeking a Junior Software Engineer with JavaScript / Node.js skills. But if you have more experience with C/C++ or other interpreted languages such as Python or Ruby and you are interested in learning or improving your JavaScript / Node.js skills this position will be the right challenge for you! In this role, you will work with a team of developers focusing on integrating and testing JavaScript / Node.js libraries into Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating systems.
You'll use your JavaScript / Node.js skills, but also C, C++ or Bash, to contribute to the upcoming releases of the Linux distribution, by taking free open source code of upstream projects and integrating it into the operating system using RPM technology. While actively contributing to the upstream projects, you will communicate with experienced hackers from all over the world and results of your work will be used worldwide. Last but not least, you will develop tests for continuous integration to ensure Node.js works as expected and plays nicely with other OS components.
This role is a great opportunity to learn a wide range of technologies and operating system principles and thanks to the variety of tasks, it will be up to you what to work on each day. You will work with modern technologies like Linux containers, OpenStack, OpenShift, or Kubernetes; all alongside some of the brightest developers in the open source community.
Develop and troubleshoot Node.js and JavaScript components and container images in supported products
Develop extensive test coverage to ensure tight integration of Node.js with other OS components
Collaborate with upstream community members of the assigned projects, other development teams in Red Hat, and Quality assurance team
Identify system deficiencies, conduct technical research and analysis, and recommend solutions or fixes
Work across project and technology boundaries to create integrated solutions based on open source projects
JavaScript / Node.js / C / C++ development experience, or experience with Linux-based operating system administration
Good English communication skills, both written and verbal
Desire to learn and solve various challenging problems
The following are considered a plus
Bash, Python or Ruby knowledge is an advantage
Solid understanding of operating system principles, including software packaging
Experience with debugging application problems (for example with GNU gdb)
Experience with Open Source development model
Practical experience with Linux containers or Kubernetes is an advantage
