About the opportunity

The Nepean Clinical School is a network of teaching hospitals of the Sydney Medical School centred in the Nepean Hospital precinct at the base of the Blue Mountains, near Penrith.

We are seeking an experienced Research Officer to work under the guidance of Dr Kathryn Williams. The incumbent will be someone who has the ability to work with a busy clinical team and with patients with complex chronic disease and social issues and their families. This position will be a good opportunity to work with researchers from broad disciplines and to learn different research techniques. The ideal candidate will be able to work autonomously and as part of team, be flexible and very organized and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. They will need to help with patient consent and collect data and may be required to collect blood and other tissue samples with adequate training and support. Experience with clinical settings and clinical documents and with REDCap is desired.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Operationalise and implement and ensure ongoing integrity of large clinical databases, in collaboration with a busy interdisciplinary clinical team and other researchers. This will include a large amount of data entry using clinical documents.
  • Make changes to the obesity-related clinical databases using REDCap under the direction of key clinicians and researchers.
  • Support researchers to work with the databases and implement other research projects related to obesity in the NBMLHD. This includes drafting and lodging of ethics and grant applications on behalf of the Chief investigator, drafting publications and performing literature reviews, database extractions and analysis and budget development, in addition to general practical research support.
  • Provide research administrative support for Dr Kathryn William sand the Lifespan Obesity node, including for educational and research related workshops.
  • Develop and manage the webpage and social media footprint for the Lifespan Obesity Node
  • Recruitment and participant support for research studies
  • Facilitation of biobanking, including through the collection of blood samples, after adequate training
  • undertake specific research activity as part of the broader Research agenda

About you

  • tertiary qualifications or relevant work experience in chronic disease management/obesity is desirable
  • a Good Clinical Practice certificate is desirable
  • demonstrated experience with the preparation and submission of grant applications, of manuscripts to peer reviewed journals and of human research ethics applications  
  • demonstrated experience undertaking literature searches and writing of reports
  • excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and achieve required outcomes
  • understanding of research ethics and relevant aspects of Work Health and Safety Policy
  • outstanding customer service experience with excellent interpersonal skills and a keen interest in metabolic health
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • experience in data collection, analysis and presentation using relevant software.
